The entire race had been dominated by Dale Jarrett. He only relinquished the lead under pit stops, or for a few laps at a time. He seemed unbeatable until the last pit stop. Jarrett's last set of tires was not as good as previous sets. His team hoped for a caution to come in and change them. That caution never came, and Dale could not match Gordon's speed.
On lap 350, Jeff Gordon blew past Dale Jarrett and never looked back. He gained a fifteen car length lead and crossed the finish line comfortably in first place. Gordon's teammates continued good showings with Terry Labonte finishing seventh and Ricky Craven finishing fifth, with a brand new crew chief. Dale Earnhardt finished eleventh after languishing in the middle of the pack all day. Mark Martin had been expected to win after winning the pole and the BGN race, but during a long green flag period, he fell a lap down, and was unable to come back. His teammate Jeff Burton turned in an outstanding thrid place finish. The Winston Cup drivers look forward to Richmond next week. |
