Dale Jarrett Beats Darlington

Dale Jarrett's Quality Care Ford was easily the car to beat all day in the Transouth 400 at Darlington. Jarrett was finally able to beat the track that's "Too Tough To Tame" and come home with a victory.

The Robert Yates powered cars of Dale Jarrett and Ernie Irvan were both dominant once the race got going after a rash of cautions early.

Jarrett was following Jeff Gordon when Gordon got in some oil a slid up into the wall. Gordon was forced to pit to change tires and repair sheet metal. A few laps later, Jarrett found himself sliding up into the wall to receive his own "Darlington Stripe." He took a chance and stayed on the track.

Even though Jarrett was strong, he was never able to pull away from the field. In the closing laps, a tight battle for the lead formed among the top several drivers.

Ted Musgrave charged up to Jarrett's back bumper with only a few laps remaining. In each turn, Musgrave would attempt a pass, but Jarrett was able to pull ahead on the straight-aways. Musgrave tried in vain on the last lap, but finished second for his third time.

Earnhardt continued his struggle, finishing 15th.
